I read it as the movie was coming out. The trailer was beautiful, and it was rumoured that finally, DiCaprio would get his oscar. I grabbed the book on discount at WHSmith. I remember being transfixed by it.

If you’ve seen the movie, the book is the same story but longer and more intense. It gets a lot more graphic and detailed, but the epic nature of it scales accordingly.
